When you run your palm gently up your leg and all there is to feel is dry sandpaper skin , it’s time to prepare for battle. Operation Silky skin is about to be in full effect.Of course, a healthy diet is the foundation to having silky, supple skin all year round.  However, here are a few additional tactics I use to keep dry skin at bay during the winter months.

1.)   Drink more water. I know water is not the ideal choice when you could have salted caramel hot chocolate, a pumpkin spice latte or a number of other warm winter drinks. It is fine to have those just don’t forget to keep your water intake at a healthy level.

2.)   Turn down the water.  Who doesn’t love a super steamy shower but be wary that the water isn’t turned to high; a hot shower is very drying to the skin. Opt for a lukewarm water temperature and a shorter shower.

3.)   Read labels. The best thing for your skin just may be to clean out your beauty cabinet. You know the one over spilling with bath and body works shower gels, the body shop exfoliators, scented soaps, and fruity smelling shaving gels.  If you take a quick glance at the ingredients in those products you might see things like propylparaben, fragrance, sodium lauryl sulfate, TEA – Lauryl Sulfate, Lauramide DEA, triethanolamine and propylene glycol**.  Products containing these ingredients are drying and harmful to the skin and should be avoided.

4.)   Ditch the lotion. So many of the lotions on the market today claim to contain aloe vera, shea butter , coconut oil, etc. and  some do but the majority of the ingredients are ones your skin is better off without. Instead it’s best to go straight to the source and use an all-natural butter or oil instead. My personal favorite is a mixture of extra virgin coconut oil, Shea butter and lavender essential oil.

5.)   Change the sheets. We all know there are plenty myths surrounding silk bedding but it can prove to be a great investment for your skin due to its low absorption. If you don’t like the idea of sleeping on silk at least opt for a silk pillowcase or pajamas. C’mon we all know wearing that silk nightgown makes us feel sexy.

6.)   Bonus tip: If you really want to go the extra mile to protect your skin. Have your water tested or simply invest in a showerhead filter.

I hoped these tips proved helpful. If you would like me to do posts in the future about products or homemade mixtures I use just comment on this post or send me a message. Until next time.

** The ingredients listed above are only a few of the more harmful chemicals found in our beauty products. If you would like a more in depth list you can check out cosmeticsdatabase.com or EWG.org
