Why do you love Fashion?

Growing up I begged my mom for magazine subscriptions. I wanted Seventeen, Vogue, W, Harper Bazaar, Essence, and Ebony. Can you believe she actually ordered me 4-year subscriptions to all of them? Each month I’d receive the newest editions and pour over them for hours. I read them cover to cover and studied them. My closet doors were covered with the collages of the photos I cut out of my favorite looks. Those photos would serve as my inspiration when I went to get dressed. I loved playing in clothes and creating all type of looks even if sometimes I wasn’t bold enough to wear it outside. Instead, I’d put on a mini runway show for my mom and grandma.

As I got older I’d help my mom and aunt get ready for their work Christmas parties, weddings, and birthday celebrations. It was always a good time. Then later I had a blast designing my sweet sixteen and prom dress with my mom. This is why I love fashion. It is connected to some of the happiest and most rewarding moments of my life. It gave me a gateway into my creativity, helped me to find my voice and tell the stories that lived in my imagination.

Since all the fashion weeks are upon us I’d thought it’d be fun to share why we love fashion, my favorite and least favorite trends, and my fashion icons. I hope this month we can have a good girl talk on why we love fashion. Let me know your reasons.

What I Wore to NYFW

Hey loves! I’m soo happy it’s Friday and the weekend can begin. I recently attended Day 3 of NYFW and it was amazing. I had a full day of shows, presentations and events throughout the city. I definitely felt like a true New Yorker being on the go and hailing down taxis. I’ll share with you, my full experience in my next post but for now, I wanted to share my look.

I had this little number from Topshop sitting in my closet, waiting to be thrown in the ring as an NYFW contender. The heels are by Mango and with a nice chunky heel walking in them all day was easy. In August, I took a vacation to Martha’s Vineyard where I purchased my necklace and rings at the loveliest jewelry shop. Oh, and my earrings are from that shop too! I wish they had a website I could share with you all because they had some great pieces. I bought quite a few for friends and family.

It was fun trying to put together a look for NYFW and nerve racking because everyone is dressed to impress. I didn’t have a lot of time to curate an outfit but I did know I wanted to stay true to my personal sense of style. It’s really important to me to remain authentic in everything  I do. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

NYFW: Christian Siriano S/S 17

SS17 CHRISTIAN SIRIANO NEW YORK FASHION WEEKI remember the first time I ever heard of Christian Siriano was on the season 4 premiere of Project Runway. He was small only in size with his personality glistening like the stars in the night. At the time, I was just a 17-year-old girl with no inclination that I would ever aspire to make my own footprints in the fashion industry. I watched him then and was inspired; years later his work is still inspiring and empowering to women.

Christian has had nothing short of a blossoming career since his days at Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and strutting his stuff with Tim Gunn. I feel like a kid in a candy store being able to present his latest collection to you.

His stunning collection is reminiscent of a fiery sunset over crystal blue water and white sand beaches. This is evident in his work since Christian was inspired by Jackie O and Isle of Capri during the late 60’s and early 70’s. He plays with hues of turquoise, burnt oranges effortlessly pairing them with sleek silhouettes. The expert tailoring shows his understanding of the feminine physique. Even more stunning than his designs are the women wearing them. I loved that women of all skin tones and body types ripped the runway. Providing powerful images of representation and inclusiveness that often eludes the industry.

Since launching his line in 2008, Christian has garnered numerous celebrity clients from Coco Rocha to Kerry Washington. He has also partnered for collaborations with Payless, Lane Bryant, and Amazon. There are four looks inspired by this collection available on Amazon to shop now. I hope you all enjoyed his designs and can keep up with him as he continues to grow his brand, here.

Easy, Breezy Blue

white and blue stripes

Hey loves! Let’s get the elephant out of the room? I’ve been quite MIA this month because I was vacationing and I really needed to relax. I spent some time in Washington D.C and on Martha’s Vineyard which is just beautiful. If you’ve never been to the Vineyard, I highly recommend it and there will be more on that trip next week.

For today, it is all about this easy, breezy blue look I wore in D.C for my birthday trip. Y’all, I really love how this outfit turned out but it was not my original plan. Typically, when I know I’m going on a trip I always plan. It doesn’t matter if I’ll be there two days or 14 days. I thoroughly plan out my outfits in advance. It just ensures my trip will not be stressful because I didn’t properly prepare unless everything goes wrong. I initially ordered pieces from Topshop for day outfits but in true Topshop fashion, my package wasn’t due to be delivered until the day I was leaving. That is literally the only pet peeve I have with Topshop is that their processing and shipping is not fast enough.

Anyway, this realization came on the eve of my departure which left me with quite the wardrobe dilemma. The good thing is I know how to shop strategically and have a photographic memory of all the pieces in my closet (not even kidding). I went out and hit some of my favorite shops. The first being Zara where I scored this super chic white skirt. Then I hit up an old favorite, Urban Outfitters because I was picking up some pieces on hold for my brother ( hashtag big sister problems). While in Urban my little eye spied this super cute bralette which is amazingly comfortable, like get you one asap. Both these pieces integrated seamlessly with items I already owned like my suede Steve Madden heels and Soko Lariat necklace.

All in all I had a great trip with my best friends. I looked and felt great even in that D.C. heat, it was literally baking down there.

Boston has been transformed into a winter wonderland, literally. There are huge snowbanks ( like the ones in these photos) all over town, with huge icicles and frigid temperatures to match. Not to mention, it takes forever to get anywhere at the moment ! A big reason I’ve been hibernating in the house for days at a time and limiting my contact with the outside world. Then, I realized at some point I had to get back to my regular life because the snow and the cold weren’t going anywhere anytime soon ! Lately, I’ve been opting for oversized sweaters (currently engrossed with this red number) and stretchy trousers when I do venture out. It’s a great combo to stay warm and still have a modicum of style in my city’s current weather lituation (for those of you who don’t know) . Toss on a pair of sparkly earrings for  a little added glam, sling on a crossbody bag for functionality and I’m ready to go. I’ve been having a bit of a red phase( see here) and I love a good red on red combo especially since it photographs so lovely against the snow. I have more coming up for you soon, so subscribe ! Leave me a comment telling me what the weather is like in your city and check out some of my picks for spring, here.

Until next time,
