The Turtleneck: How To Style This Wardrobe Basic

How to Style The Turtleneck

How to Style The Turtleneck

Turtlenecks are the bomb. Sweaters, hoodies and fuzzy oversized cardigans are amazing too. But a turtleneck is the perfect way to chic up your look while layering strategically.

So often are closets are missing essential basics simply because they’re boring. Or we think they are. I used to feel this way too. Why spend my money on a cami or plain turtleneck when I can buy those stylish oversized sweaters instead? Let’s answer that.

1| It cuts down on the bulk and adds warmth.

Have you ever successfully paired an oversized sweater with a cardigan? Probably not. They are just not pieces that complement each other. Not to mention it just wouldn’t be comfortable.

2| Neutral Color Options

Basics usually come in a handful of color options. Making them easy to pair with pretty much anything.

Now, that we covered why to buy your basics, in this case, the turtleneck. Let’s talk style tips.

1| Make it a focal point

My gray turtleneck is a focal point without clashing with my cardigan simply because it’s grey. It complements the black without being overbearing.

2| Layer it with a blazer or cardigan

This is my favorite way to rock a turtleneck. If you want to dress up choose the blazer. If you want a more casual look go with the cardigan. Whatever you choose, keep it chic an fun.

Styling Winter Wardrobe Essentials

winter,Winter Wardrobe Essentials
Winter is here. It was only a few weeks ago it felt like summer in November. Now New England is in full winter temperatures. It’s been getting cold. Therefore, I’d thought I share a few tips and few essentials items to transition from a fall to winter wardrobe.

Layering is Queen

I’ll say this until the end of time. It’s the Golden Rule of the winter wardrobe. I’m not sure this even needs to be a tip anymore but it’s always worth reiterating. If you want the breakdown of the mechanics of layering then you’ll want to read my ” 3 Tips to Perfect the Art of Layering” post.

Go Long

It’s time for long sleeves and hemlines. I love tunics because they add vertical height and cover your bum. Choosing longer & oversized items helps to keep you warm without being bulky.

Sleek & Chic

Hate when your scarf snags your earrings or necklace? I love bold jewelry but in the colder months when I tend be heavily layered I prefer jewels more minimalistic. It’s also the time of year I tend to wear a watch because it gets so dark so early. I’m always surprised when I check the time & it’s only 4pm.

Winter Beauty

* Grandiose Liner by Lancôme – this line has quickly become my favorite. I love the brush which makes it easy to do winged liner.

* Beauty Marked Eyeshadow by Mac – When I just want a light eyeshadow I reach for this one. It’s easy to apply to the lid and blend out into the crease to create a soft beautiful eye

*Fit Me Matte Foundation by Maybelline – This is by far my favorite drugstore foundation. It’s easy to build coverage and gives a natural finish. It also feels so light on the skin.

* Radiant Creamy Concealer by NARSThis is no surprise to my long-time readers. It’s my holy grail concealer.

Why I Love Being Curious + A Casual Fall Look

curious, ootd, outfit of the day, fall look

curious, ootd, outfit of the day, fall look

All my life I’ve always been naturally curious. It’s one reason I used to love going on car rides with my parents as a child. I’d be fascinated by all the scenarios taking place outside my window. And I just observe in silence. Eventually, all that observing led to many questions and I’d bombard my mom and dad with them.

The first time we ever drove to New York as a family was an eye opening experience for me. I was enthralled by all the different communities from the suburban hills, to the lakes, bridges, buildings to the corner stores. It’s what sparked my interest in culture, art and history. I wanted to know what shaped communities, languages and the origin of all the different music we’d hear driving down a street in Brooklyn. I also wanted to know why New Yorkers drove so crazy but that question wouldn’t cross my mind until years later.

Today, I’m still just as curious. Which is why I love walking around my neighborhood and discovering new details. One which happens to be this stone pillar just chilling in the middle of a parking lot. Which we couldn’t resist shooting in front of because it contrasted with my outfit pretty nicely. I also find people tend to stop and watch when we’re shooting photos. A lot of times they ask questions and we’ll just have a conversation. It’s just nice. Nice to learn about the people who make up our community while I’m doing something I love.  Because as I got older I learned that it’s the people who shape the communities.

My Favorite Fall Color Combo

Fall color combo, how to wear burgundy this fall , song of style

Fall color combo, how to wear burgundy this fall , song of style

Another fall season, new fall obsessions. Going deep, dark and edgy is usually the go-to vibe for the season. My favorite fall color combo shouldn’t come as a surprise then. It’s all about the burgundy and gray. I love wearing different shades of gray, especially in the cooler months because it just fits my vibes. Issa vibe, ya know?

Suede is the little obsession of mine that isn’t going away. Here’s why:

  1. Suede makes any item look more luxe, therefore, it always elevates a look.
  2. It pairs well with matte or patent finishes which means every piece of your outfit will pop. And on a whole look a lot more seamless
  3. Well, it just feels nice * shoulder shrug*

Those are the reasons suede is always a staple in my closet. When I’m wearing such fitted denim and top I love to have pieces that create movement and depth. Cue, the suede, and burgundy. The fringe detailing on the jacket and bucket bag help to create a nice movement which looks great in photos.

I’m always preaching about how to tie everything together. One way to do this without being matchy is with finishes and accessories. There were gold finishes on the hardware of my bag and shoes, therefore, I did gold earrings to create flow from head to toe.

I have a post upcoming up this month that will give you a more in-depth breakdown. So stay tuned and share your favorite fall color combo in the comments.

Last Summer Look

the last summer look, urban outfitters blogger style

It’s technically, the last day of summer. I’ve been in fall mode for weeks now but the weather this past weekend was holding on to summer. It was still warm enough for me to squeeze out this last summer look. Every year it seems I always do an ode to summer post and the tradition continues this year.

I had intended on shooting a fall look but it was way too hot for turtleneck chunky sweaters. Instead, I decided to pay homage to summer with this mauve pink romper by Urban Outfitters. This romper is really cute on its own but it needed some styling to help it pop. I added a gold chain Michael Kors belt to create more shape and add a unique detail. This is pretty much the only way I wear belts. They are such an underrated accessory but can update a look easily.

I always pay attention to how I can pair complementary or unique color palettes together. The mauve color in the romper pairs well with pinks and browns. Therefore, layering a light pink blazer helped to create a nice contrast which helped the romper pop. The different shades of brown are neutral tones that tie everything together. Of course, there has to be a little bling, enter these droplet earrings. They also tie in the gold accents in the purse and belt. Voilà. You have the perfect end of summer look.

Do you like seeing me break down my outfit choices and why I paired certain pieces? Is it helpful to you? I’m always looking to improve and create more valuable content you all will enjoy.  We recently expanded our content to include a youtube channel with videos focusing on style, beauty, and weekly vlogs. Check it out and let us know what you’d like to see there as well. We’re also working on a few new projects to launch later this year and next year. We are always trying to improve and your feedback is welcomed.

p.s. we = my brother and I. We run this blog together and he is the one behind all the lovely photography on the blog and across my social media.

Transitioning into Fall with the Leather Mini Skirt

Transitioning into Fall
Transitioning into Fall

There are only a few weeks lefts of summer. Fall is quickly coming upon us and I wanted to share a look for transitioning into fall fashion. I love a good leather faux mini skirt and I’m sure you know this by now. Apparently, I must give thanks to designer, Mary Quant, as she is credited with inventing the mini skirt.

It’s a great piece to wear for the end of summer while still bringing in the fall vibes. I think it’s the leather. Fall = leather in my book. This skirt by Leith is great because of the texture detailing. It adds a cool, edgy vibe while being great for summer and fall. I love the soft material and the high waist line which is unique for a mini skirt.

A black and white combo is always a favorite. To keep it refreshing I chose a white top that has flowy open sleeves and a fun detailed open back. If you love a certain look I suggest looking for unique, quirky or statement details in the pieces you’re pairing together. This way it keeps things feeling fresh. I love transitioning into fall with color as well. My Dolce and Gabbana bag has been my favorite lately, it’s just the perfect amount of fun color. It’s one of those colors I believe work year round and is perfect for transitioning into different seasons.

The leather mini works so well with many different styles of shoes. You can pair it like I did with stilettos, with a pair of slides, or booties. It’s definitely a piece you can wear well into October.

Ugh. Can’t believe I’m even thinking about October. I love fall but I’m not a fan of the steady temperature decline. I’m a summer baby, can’t help it. Let me know if what you’d like to see more of on the blog this fall in the comments.

What to wear on the days you don’t want to get dressed?

don't want to get dressed , blogger style

don't want to get dressed , summer outfits to copy now, pinterest women's fashionWhat to wear on the days you don’t want to get dressed? Bodysuit and joggers. This is my go to uniform on the rare days I just don’t want to get dressed. It usually happens on the days when I’m in a crazy work coma and glued to my laptop. Alas, even then I may need to run out to do quick errands.

I really love joggers because they offer all the comfort of sweatpants but are more stylish. In my humble opinion. The pair I’m wearing is from Express and are the most comfortable thing ever. I really live in them. When I just need to quickly go to the store I always reach for them. Just to round out the comfort I slipped on my H&M sandals because they go with everything, are easy to put on and comfortable.

I really love finding pieces that do double duty in my wardrobe. I want to be able to wear it casually or to work or to happy hour. This is why I invested in my Alexander McQueen clutch. On a casual day, it adds the perfect amount of glam and unique detail.

When it’s all paired together it does not appear that I rolled out of bed and hopped in my car. Instead, it looks like I put in some effort. No matter how much we love clothes and getting dressed up we all have those days where we can’t even deal.

As for my beauty routine, I skipped all the makeup, hence my huge shades. Instead, I just swiped on my sinful cinnamon lipstick by Buxom. It’s definitely my favorite at the moment and one I recommend in my 5 lip colors to try this month post. Of course, the topknot was the necessary hairstyle. Let me know the one thing in your closet you live in.

Sharing is caring <3

The Most Comfortable Sports Bra Ever

sports bra, calvin klein, chill sunday outfit
sports bra, calvin klein, chill sunday outfit

This past week I’d been really drained. I have so many things in the work so when Sunday rolled around I just wanted to chill. I didn’t have much to do except recover from a pretty bad allergic reaction, run a few errands and wait for Games of Thrones. Can we talk about this season?!  I love the dragons and I’m obsessed with Arya. She’s everything.I’m so ready for next week’s episode.

As you can see I had a chill Sunday. I decided to sport my sports bra by Calvin Klein. The love I have for it is so real and it is by far one of the comfiest things I own. It’s probably not that great for working out but it is for lounging around. Or styling as a part of your outfit. Some days we just have to ditch the standard bra.

My American Apparel skirt paired well and the material is just as comfortable. I was pretty sad when I heard they were going out of business. I definitely lived in American Apparel during college. It was literally the first store I ran to when I needed a “going out” outfit. However, I am happy they relaunched their online store.

The all white was very unintentional. My mind might have still been lingering on my birthday dress. Since I am me I had to bring in some color. I really love how a cobalt blue and fuschia shade of pink compliment one another. Wearing bright colors instantly makes me feel more positive. When I feel positive I’m more productive and everything just flows easier. It’s such a small thing but the impact is amazing.

Pin Up Vibes | Summer Vacation Outfit

I never thought summering in the Vineyard would be a thing. At least not for me. However, when one of my favorite people of all time moved out there it changed the game. This was my second summer heading out to Martha’s Vineyard and we did a really fun girls trip for my birthday. It was great to spend time with my two best friends and just relax. We all work so much it can be hard to find time for us to all hangout. When I get to spend time with Sami and Karol it’s always an amazing time.We took lots of photos and video so you’ll get a peek into the celebration all this week. Be sure to subscribe to the youtube channel to know when my travel diary and vlogs of the trip go up.

Sami is a photographer and spotted this old school chevy truck. We had to stop. Actually, she whipped the car around so quickly Karol and I thought something was wrong. Instead, she turned and said, ” we have to shoot your look here”. It really was perfect and lent to the pin up vibes of my outfit.

Of course being on an island warrants the right kind of summer vacation outfit. Most importantly the right kind of shoes. I went for cute sandals with a minimal heel. I really loved the style of my Nine West sandals because the wedge heel adds a bit of elegance while also being comfortable to walk in. Big floppy hats for summer will always be a must in my book. Pairing geometric patterned hat really made the look pop. Not to mention it was a great way to protect my hair and skin from the sun.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes and the sweet comments you leave. It really makes my day. If you are on the email list you got a special treat on my birthday. If you’re not on the list sign up below so you don’t miss out on exclusives. Let me know where you all are traveling this summer.
